Teen Suicide and the Role of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Introduction: â€Å"The overall goal for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project is to meet the challenge of preparing future nurses who will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work†(Graduate KSAs, 2014 para.1) In looking through the competencies that this statement embodies, I have chosen the competency of safety. This competency is defined as minimizing the risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance (2014). The topic I have chosen to discuss in regards to safety is the role that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) plays in the recognition and the treatment of teen suicide. According to the National Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance survey (2013) suicide among teens and adolescents is a major health problem. It is the 3rd leading cause of death in 10-24 year olds in the United States. In the survey, 17% of students reported seriously considering suicide in the 12 months prior to the survey (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2013). With these reported numbers in the pediatric population, it is of vital importance that the PNP as the primary care provider (PCP) knows how to appropriately screen for, refer and treat this patient. Socrates and Aristotle would think that philosophy was for the greater good and expanding the minds of those around them. Socrates in particular would regard philosophy as conversational and weeding out those who ‘know’ and those who do not. Aristotle would use philosophy to try to reach the conclusion on what happiness is. These great thinkers believed absolute contemplation was the greatest pleasure human beings could reach, so for them philosophy was reaching a type of Nirvana. Take the Apology as an example of what Socrates thought about philosophy. When charged with atheism and corrupting the youth he defends himself by claiming he is an ignorant man. He thinks that Holden has acheerful disregard and that there is nothing wrong with him. He also feels that Holdensmistakes are not caused by him, but by the adult world. This book is totally opposite ofhow he categorizes it. In fact, Holden has is far from typical. The language he uses ispreposterous and he always jumps to assumptions. Burgers first thought that Holden is a typical teenager is way off. Typicalteenagers do not flunk out of school after school. An example of this is, They kicked meout. I wasnt supposed to come back after Christmas vacation on account of I wasflunking all four subjects and not applying myself and all. This is Holdens reaction to theprofanity, It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other littlekids would see it, and how theyd wonder what the hell it meant, and then finally somedirty kid would tell them all cockeyed, about it and maybe even worry about it for acouple of days. Teachers ask us not to curse and then feed us the language throughout this book.
